There are two types of motors currently used in electric vehicles - permanent magnet synchronous motors and non-magnetic induction AC asynchronous motors.
Permanent magnet synchronous motor technology is mature and efficient, so it is used in most electric vehicles with single motor designs. For example, the Tesla Model 3 long-range version has a rear single motor.
But the permanent magnet motor has a big disadvantage - it requires the use of precious rare earth materials.There are also shortcomings such as the slightly higher price of permanent magnet synchronous motors and the easy demagnetization at high temperatures.
The advantage of induction AC asynchronous motor is that it does not require rare earth, but the disadvantage is that the torque density and power density are low, and the size is large.The internationally advanced efficiency of induction AC asynchronous motors can generally reach 92%, which is slightly lower than that of permanent magnet motors.
For example, Tesla, Weilai, etc. use dual-motor performance versions, which are permanent magnet synchronous rear axle and induction asynchronous front axle solutions.The advantages of permanent magnet synchronous motors are high power saving efficiency and better battery life, while the advantages of induction asynchronous motors are fast response and large torque output, which can improve performance.
This is one reason why four-wheel drive electric vehicles such as Tesla Model 3 and Weilai have strong performance.On the one hand, the faster-responsive induction asynchronous motor is placed on the front axle, and its four-wheel drive response speed is not comparable to the four-wheel drive of ordinary fuel vehicles with mechanical transmission.
But in any case, induction AC asynchronous motor is the future development direction.
